All the Philadelphia Flyers needed to get their power-play unit back on track were a couple deflections and lucky bounces.

Scott Hartnell scored two of Philadelphia’s four power-play goals, leading the Flyers to a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.

After going 6-for-63 with a man advantage over their previous 15 games, the Flyers were 4-for-7 with the extra skater against the Islanders.

Ted Nolan can start Rick DiPietro , Wade Dubielewicz , or even coax Hall of Famer Billy Smith out of retirement.

If the New York Islanders keep playing poor defense in front of their goalie, it won’t make much difference who the coach picks to play.

Scott Gomez deflected a shot past Dubielewicz, the usual backup to DiPietro, early in the third period, and the New York Rangers earned a split of the home-and-home series with a 4-1 victory Thursday night.

The Rangers, who lost to the Islanders 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday night, came out of the two-game series with three points out of four. They are 8-0-3 in their last 11.

Rick DiPietro rejoined the New York Islanders for practice on Wednesday with no assurance he would be back in goal Thursday night for the second half of a home-and-home series with the rival New York Rangers.

DiPietro had been away from the team since the conclusion of Saturday’s loss to Philadelphia due to the death of his grandmother earlier in the week. He went home to New England for the wake Sunday and the funeral Monday.

The All-Star goalie, in the second season of a 15-year contract with the Islanders, figured to come back and play Tuesday night in the road portion of the two-game series against the Rangers, but was convinced by general manager Garth Snow—a former netminder—to take another day off.

Wade Dubielewicz made 27 saves and then stopped five of six Rangers shots in the shootout to lift the Islanders to a 4-3 victory. DiPietro returned to the New York area during the afternoon, but didn’t attend the game in Manhattan. Read more »
